These images are from the book 100 SINGAPOREANS by Wesley Loh Kar-Wai. Our sense of identity roots us to a place, and is often grounded in our memories, both private and shared. Private memories are intimate – they are the faces of your family, friends and the personal moments that you had with them. Shared memories are what we have as a group or a people, such as the faces that we saw as we were growing up on the streets, in the shops and restaurants. These faces make up the face-scape of our shared memories. But with each generation, the face-scape changes. Change is organic and inevitable, and 100 SINGAPOREANS is the first book to focus on capturing a broad spectrum of Singaporean faces that make up today’s face-scape. The faces, staring straight at the reader with honesty and directness, make us consider what it is that we have in common and what makes us identifiably Singaporean. Published by Epigram, it is a keepsake of the collective memory of the Singaporean face-scape from this period in history. Wesley’s book is available at Popular, Kinokuniya and Select Books.
