Sights and Sounds

Returning for its fifth edition this year, Singapore Biennale, a four-month-long international contemporary art exhibition, has become a platform for cultural and artistic exchanges and discourse. Held from Oct 27, 2016 to Feb 26, 2017, this Biennale features 58 works by 63 artists and art collectives from across South-east Asia, East Asia and South Asia.

Working with the theme of An Atlas of Mirrors, the artworks explore the intertwining relationships shared by people and places in Asia across social, political, geographical and historical spheres.

For this Biennale, Singapore’s sound and media artist Zulkifle Mahmod has attempted to capture the unique soundscapes of the different South-east Asian communities that have made Singapore their home. His work, SONICreflection, is a sound sculpture transmitted through tweeters mounted on a panel of wok lids. It is composed of recordings, ranging from snippets of dialogue to incidental noise, taken at locations around Singapore where these communities congregate.
