This mural of a turtle and iguana is one of 10 painted in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of a collaboration between Nepali artists and artists from Singapore-based social enterprise, Social Creatives, all under 35. The FOCUS section in this issue explores the many social causes that youth in singapore are supporting to create a better world.

The two animals on the mural along an avenue in the residential neighbourhood of Baluwatar in Morang district, Kathmandu, were painted by Singapore’s Social Creatives artist Renny Normala, 21 and Nepali artist Aditya Aryal, 24. It’s symbolic of the friendly ties between the two countries; the turtle representing Nepal and the iguana, Singapore.

The five-year-old group had been invited by Nepali-based Sattya Media Arts Collective to paint murals and create street art in Kathmandu as part of an initiative named ‘Kolor Kathmandu’, with an objective to inspire change throughout the urban landscape. The team of 10 youths spent three weeks in Nepal in March 2013; the murals were a collaboration between their Nepali counterparts and the local community.

Social Creatives promotes its mission of making Singapore happier through art by creating public murals in various parts of Singapore that include the Old Parliament House. Their first void deck art gallery was at MacPherson. This was the first collaboration between Singapore and another Asian country and the second overseas painting endeavour. Apart from Nepal, in October 2011, Social Creatives was invited to paint a mural in conjunction with the National Mural Symposium in Toronto, Canada. Both overseas projects were supported by SIF’s Singapore Internationale programme. Check out their work in Singapore and abroad at http://socialcreativessingapore.weebly.com/
