National Gallery Singapore recently opened its doors after a decade-long restoration that transformed two heritage buildings, the former Supreme Court and City Hall, into a 64,000 sq m museum that houses the world’s largest public collection of modern art from South-east Asia. A newly constructed roof terrace over the two wings of the museum grants visitors access to the Rotunda dome (above), which is hardly visible at streetlevel.
With more than 8,000 works spanning the 19th and 20th centuries in its collection, including artworks by pioneer Singapore artists and icons of modern art in the region, the museum showcases the interconnections between Singapore and South-east Asian art in an international context. It seeks to inspire and engage visitors through art and to create dialogue about the art of Singapore, South-east Asia and the world.
