But apart from delighting children – and the young at heart – who ran up and down the length of its circular spine, the structure has, over the years, become an icon of Singapore design.

The landmark is a key feature of the 1.3km Toa Payoh Heritage Trail, which was recently launched to showcase the historical milestones of the neighbourhood it is named after.

Otherwise known as Singapore’s first public housing estate, Toa Payoh is significant for boasting many firsts, including being home to Singapore’s first Residents’ Association and Mass Rapid Transit station.

Developed from swampland in the 1960s, the neighbourhood has evolved into a town centre teeming with activity. Other highlights of the trail include Toa Payoh Sports Complex, which hosted more than 1,500 athletes and officials during the 1973 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, and Sri Vairavimada Kaliamman Temple, which stands resplendent with its meticulously carved reliefs and statues.

These points of interest are symbols of Singapore’s rich cultural diversity, and present perfect photo opportunities.
