Promising Art

A wish to represent Singapore as an artist when she grows up, and a resolution to keep his neighbourhood clean. These are some of the promises made by 50 residents of diverse backgrounds and ages – embodied by an artwork titled 3652 + 50 at the Woodlands South Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station (above). Created by Singaporean artist and educator Kng Mian, the “time capsule of promises” represents the number of years it would take to fulfil the resolutions by the 50 residents. It features a 6,900m2 vitreous enamel wall cladding with 28 fabricated colour panels arranged in a Penrose tile design – a technique that entails an aperiodic tiling of a plane using a pair of shapes. Kng had hoped to portray the daily commute as part of one’s journey through life, while giving a nod to Singapore's identity as a “garden city” with a green colour scheme. She is one of many local artists commissioned to create artworks via the Art-in-Transit programme, an initiative aimed at giving creative agency to the residents of neighbourhoods lining the Thomson-East Coast Line. Conceptualised almost 10 years ago, the latest line on Singapore’s MRT public transportation system was opened in November 2022, giving residents in the East and North-South corridor of Singapore quicker access to the city centre.
